Logan’s See-ya-later
-Logan Battison
Hello! My name is Logan.
This is a very bittersweet message. Next week my family and I move to a new home in Overland Park KS. This week I say goodbye to my CrossFit Chicago friends and coaches. To say the least, we are thrilled to move from our condo life in Bucktown to a spacious home, yard, nearby family etc. Our time in Chicago has been filled with great experiences and people and just overall good times. As this move has drawn closer I have thought about the things I will end up missing the most from my old city and as you may guess CFC is at the top of that list. Let me share a bit about my story with CFC.
I joined CFC in September 2011, and like many before they find CrossFit, I had become used to living too high on the hog and was a bloated, lazy man. Sweet SaraC took me through the Baseline workout that I made it through in about 6 or so minutes (banded pulls up, knee pushups). I flailed around on the floor for about 45 minutes after this, unable to speak. 3hrs later I started to regain basic motor functions…it was BAD! My first workout happened to be a partner WOD with AdamB, a 20min AMRAP of farmers carry’s/sprints. Again I resembled someone that just got shot and electrocuted at the same time. Over time I lost the bands, got quicker, shed weight, recovered faster, and started going Rx… like in a montage! I even did a Paleo Challenge with my wife in June and got so freaking sexy. Fran, Murph and many other Heroes and firsts will always be remembered inside CFC’s walls. I learned to be tough again here, to embrace the path that pain leads you down, to taste the victory of not giving up.
I want to extend my gratitude to the coaches of CFC and to the community of amazing individuals. Each and every coach has made an impact in my life by ingraining discipline, form, drive, and perseverance back into my heart. Thank you for what you do. To all the members I have had the privilege to get to know and train with, thank you for making this such a positive environment. This year has been full of change for my family and you all played a much larger role in making it a success than you may know. The Battison’s thank CFC and wish each of you the very best.

All the best to you man, good luck!

A much different experience this morning at New Species Crossfit. Great coaching and great facility. So if you’re in the Birmingham – Detroit Metro area make sure you stop in to see Josh.
They also have a cheerleading puppy there that loves to get up in your stuff while you’re stretching.
I am definitely going to miss running into you, Logan. Best of luck!
Came up w/a random collage of movements so I could move in alongside the 6am crew
30 min amrap (w/20# vest):
250m row
10 ring pushups (feet on 12″ box)
7 strict pullups
10 box jumps (24″)
7 ghd situps
ROUNDS – 9
Everything was unbroken and just stayed moving. The last 10 mins is when things started getting rough
@ The Only Prescription: You could also try Crossfit Bloomfield. That’s the box I go to when I’m back home. Although I don’t have Abbey there pushing me (or making me feel weak) so it’s just not the same… but does the job.
Happy Birthday TimS!!!
Swim
300 wu
8x20s:10s (tred the 10s)
6×25 kick board sprint (15 sec rest)
6×25 all out sprint (1:1 rest)

300 cd
Total: 1700
@Perscription: I go to Plymouth CrossFit when I am home. Good community/atmosphere. Everyone’s pretty competitive there as well.
30 min AMRAP with Tina T and Jean. Great to work with both of them and they were great motivators:
Team total 10 rounds plus 486 meters on the rower when time ran out.
This was rough after being off for 5 days and recovering from a cold, but it felt good to be back. Probably could have gone a little heavier than 30% on the thrusters.
Sad to see you go, Logan. Was always a lot of fun working out with ya. Visit often!
@ke$ha haven’t been but I’ll have to look into it next time I’m in town
@abbey I’m a big fan of Plymouth. Was there a couple months ago
All the best Logan and Family! I remember coaching you on one of your first days with us. You were always a great member to coach and watching your exponential improvement was awesome! Great job and keep up all your hard work. Come visit!
Good Luck Logan!
10 Thrusters (52)
500M Row
Great effort by Christina and Chang! Finished with 10 rounds and 450 meters. Wish I would have finished the final 50!
Did thrusters at 42#, these were the only thing that felt good this workout. Row was slow and painful. Great job Cheng and Megan! It was awesome to watch Megan powering through on the row.
Good Luck in KS, Logan!
See ya later!
Entry #4
Getting up in the pitch blackness of the morning, I am having severe regrets about Matsumoto’ing the desert table over Thanksgiving. My joints are achy, much like my heart, my achy, breaky heart (hahaha). My head feels as though it has been partying with Charlie Sheen and Sam Kinison… well maybe not to that extent, or even close to that, but a similar allegory for sure (to a much lesser extent).
The change of weather has taken a turn for the worse, it’s 30 f’ing degrees outside and this is cause for great concern amongst the menfolk of Chicago. Gone are the days of… hold on, one second… I just caught a glance of my image in the window of my office… the mostly lean silhouette, the masculine shoulder outline… breathtaking.
Now, what was I talking about? Ah yes, the annual changing of the guard in Chicago, yoga pants are replaced with flannels, summer dresses are replaced by UGG boots (gross), day drinking on boats is replaced by day drinking inside my apartment whilst watching Lord of the Ring Marathons on TNT after football season ends.
Diary, I can only hope and pray that I can endeavor through the dark times that lie ahead, bad days wait for us to discover them, lurking like turds in the McDonalds playground ball pit of our lives.
Fin.
P.S.
Logan, sorry to see you go, you are one of the few people that I know whose name could simultaneously be used as the title character in an 80′s action movie and as a headlining gay porn star… so you have that going for you, which is pretty sweet.
JoeP
Logan,
All the best in the future my friend!!!!!!!!
@Logan good luck and coincidentally I’ll be in overland park in two weeks.if you get hooked up with a box down there in the next week or so let me know and I’ll come drop by and join you for a WOD

Logan, good to see you off for your last workout. We’ll definitely miss your energy and presence at CrossFit Chicago. Best of luck in KC, and hopefully we’ll catch you soon buddy.
Did today’s WOD with Melissa S and Jean
10 thrusters @ 53#
500m row
10 rds + 486m row – I was the sucka that couldn’t get the last 14m in before the 30 min were up. Although, not too bad for getting on the rower when Randy yelled 90 seconds, but I blame the ailments I’m still recovering from!
Good Luck Logan!
Unrelated to anything else today:

Logan, best wishes on the move to your new home. I’m actually originally from OP and my parents still live there so I’ll be in town over Christmas. I know there is a Overland Park CF now (haven’t been there but MarcS visited for work awhile back), so maybe we can get in a workout when I’m home later this month. We’ll miss ya!
Team Workout, Rx’d w/ MattJ & BrettL:
Rounds: 13 rds + 246 m
Rougher than it looked on paper. Thrusters nice and light but could feel the lactic acid building up in my legs once I got on the rower.
Great group at noon: Thanks to my AMRAP partners – Melisa, Lisa, and Kim!
YOGA FOR ATHLETES: Tonight/Tuesday
We’ll be doing a little post-holiday detox with some twists.
7-8pm
Email melissa@crossfitchicago.com for more details.
Hope to see you there…and GOOD LUCK, LOGAN!
Peace.
It’s been fun Logan, good luck in KC…
Good Luck Logan!
Anthony is correct, I visited Overland Park CF a few months ago and had a great experience – definitely look them up (Mike Groopman is the owner/coach).
I like having a team workout during the week!!
Great job to my partners Melissa D, Lisa, and Kim!
Thrusters were all unbroken, 65#.
We each finished 3rds.
Best of luck Logan!
3 person team w/Erica and Jason
30 min AMRAP:
10 thrusters #95
500m row
@Jason, good job keeping it going!
10 rds and 200+ meters
Post: w/ Erica
5 rds
12 GHD Sit ups
12 back extensions
What Dane said….
Dear Diary,
I saw JoeP at CFC today, he is so dreamy with his long curly hair. I said “Hi” but he didn’t seem to notice me. Maybe I need a 80′s teen flick make-over, I can get contacts and get new clothes…pull a “Can’t Buy Me Love”, then he’ll notice me!
@Logan, always great working out with you…I wish everyone wore shirts like yours, I’d have to do less burpees.
Rich, Gene and I attacked this one. 12 rounds and 261M. Lucky me, I got to go first and do the extra 10 thrusters and 261M. Great push guys, thanks making sure I had some time on the clock to get back to the rower…It was a special treat.
Partnered with Bdub and Dan on this one.
13 + 242m. Found out after the fact the 6amers got us by 4 meters. Nicely done. If I had to guess my splits they were probably 1:38, 1:41, 1:43, 1:44, 1:46 give or take a second.
B1) 4×12 reverse hypers @ 90#
B2) 4×15 GHD situps
C1) 10 min planks
This was a great workout to come back to after an extended holiday weekend! Partnered up with Louis and Sean (sp?) on this one. Nice job today fellas. 11rds +315M not RX. Had to sub front squats (95#) for the thrusters. Shoulder is slowly improving, but I can tell there’s still a long modified road ahead. Will keep battling!! Great class Rachel and Karen and thanks for the rowing tips.
Logan, safe travels and best of luck in KS man.
Thank you all so much.
Very hard work on my last day. Teamed with the great Jonny Vu and Bob (gimme 135 thrusters) the PoPo.
12 rd’s and 150 ish meters. Of course I had lead off so I had the final partial round. Perfect ending.
Glad Bryce made it in to push me at the end and remind me he wishes he got confused for a gay porn star.
Anthony and Jamison and Bryce and anyone else coming to the OP, my email is lbattison at gmail.
You all will be missed.
3 person team
30 min AMRAP:
10 thrusters @42lbs
500m row
9 rds and 2 awesome thrusters by Tori!
4 person team with Erin, Gina and Kelly. Kelly and I paired together….redheads unite! Erin and I did 85# thrusters, Kelly and Gina did 75#.
11 rounds +307m. Props to Erin for finishing up the last round up even after time was called!
Partnered with Rachel and Dubie on this. Awesome team work!
AMRAP Rx’d: 11 rds + 8 thrusters
Good luck Logan!
The bald (ish) crew took this one seriously today, especially after Gene & I elected Woody to go first. As Woody said, we got 12 rounds plus 291m, which was pretty darn good IMO.
Favorite moment of the day was Jason not realizing that this was a 30 minute AMRAP. He had 3 rounds in his head, I think that 4th one took him by surprise. He almost had to visit the bucket on that last row. Welcome back to the Metcon, my friend!
Still feeling like crap from my weekend binge of alcohol, m&ms and bad food.
Partnered with Jared and markG on this one.
12 rds + 7 thrusters ( thanks mark)
Nice pace, good technique made a difference for me, here and had enough in the tank to get mark back up on the thrusters.
AMRAP with Carl, Josh, and Alex.
12 rounds plus 1 thruster. Thanks to Alex for pushing me each round and great job by Josh crushing his last round. Great work by all. Fun workout.
Worked with Spencer and Nick
10 rounds + 220m
First day back for both Spencer and myself in about a week.
Yoga! Really great to get back to CFC.
Team MACK (Maggie, Angie, Courtney, and Krystal) finished 10 rounds and 250m at 65#. i got in 3 rounds
kept my rowing splits in the 1:57/1:58 range – so thankful for sara’s rowing classes. i hope they come back.
thrusters didn’t suck as much as i thought they would.
Loooooogan!!! We will definitely miss you buddy.
I’ll never forget your 10am Slow jam session while we all rolled out. Great times!
Partnered with Elizabeth P, Gina, and Kelly, see above.
Holy vomit! I didn’t puke, but it was definitely close. Whew, good one.
It’s been 8days since I last saw the inside of CFC, far too long.
Team MACK (Maggie, Angie, Courtney, Krystal) metcon:
10 rounds + ~250m in 30 mins.
At the 30 min mark Gina told us (Maggie & I) we couldn’t stop, had to finish out the round. We likely were past the 250m mark, but not totally sure what it was. Finished the round to make it 4 full rounds completed.
Row splits: 2:08/9, 1:59, 2:03, 2:16(coasted after time was called). Rowing class made a major difference, so glad I took it. could’ve increased my strokes/min on the 1st one.
Great tough workout to come back to.
Partnered with AdamC and Radis
12 rounds + 396M
(I had to sub in push presses for thrusters, which probably was the reason I was not dying at the end).
Metcon Rx’d (slightly modded)
Complete 1 round every 8 minutes for 4 rounds of:
10 thrusters
500m row
Had a friend join me on this one. Tried to simulate having a 3rd person by going every 8 minutes. My focus was to stay 5-10 seconds within each round instead of having a major drop off.
Made this one up on Thursday with JasonK and Noah.
We finished with 11 rounds and 100m rowed. I went first so I got in 4 full rounds. All thrusters as a group were unbroken and felt pretty solid. Rowing really started to take a toll though in the last two rounds. Solid work all around though.
Made this up on Thursday with Kevin and Kristi.
9 rounds + 380M rowed.
Kristi and I scaled down to 42# thrusters.
Also great job David on his first class today! Hurray!
The rumors of a leg burner were absolutely true. Made this up Thursday in a team of 4 with John, JJ and Mike.
11 rounds + 10 thrusters (15 total round completed but John and Mike went at same time)
All thrusters unbroken and rows about 1:50-1:55ish. I remember the days when 95# thrusters were torture for me. These felt pretty good today, very satisfying.
Made this one up Thursday with Akira and Joe (sorry, Joe, I don’t know your last initial, but you are much cooler than JoeP). I went 95#, the other gentlemen went 65#.
12 rounds + I had the distinct privilege of tacking on 10 thrusters at the very end.
Splits were 2:11, 2:15, 2:18, 2:25, :22. As No Talent said above, I remember really dreading 95# thrusters and in this workout, these were just the appetizer to getting my posterior handed to me by the rower. Can’t say it makes me look forward to my next Fran, but maybe it makes me dread it a little less.
Well this was a real special treat today.
Teamed up with Kelly and Kitty
WOD @55#
we did 3 rounds each and Kelly finished it out to 400m for round 10.
