2013 CrossFit Open/Nutrition Challenge
-Bryce Wood

What better time for our next nutrition challenge than through the biggest event of the CrossFit calendar? Throughout the entire CrossFit Open season, we’re going to be running our upcoming nutrition challenge to make sure that, if you choose to participate, your body is primed to be as successful as possible each week for your workouts.

To keep things constantly varied, we’ll be running this challenge a little differently than we have in the past. We’re going to have coaches leading 4 different nutrition plans with slightly different focuses.

1. Paleo – If you’ve never done a nutrition challenge before, this a great way to start. Eating paleo is the general direction that all of the programs recommended by CrossFit Chicago will take you. This plan will be based on making good food quality decisions for optimal energy and health, by eating meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and some fruit.

2. Low Carb Paleo – This is just another step on top of a regular Paleo Diet. Eating a low carb version of Paleo will yield a faster loss in bodyfat, but will take more discipline. The emphasis on food choices for this diet will be more geared toward detoxigying sugar and increased drop in bodyfat percentage.

3. The Zone – The Zone is a diet designed by Barry Sears to make sure that you are getting the proper macronutrient balance of protein, carbs, and fat throughout the day. This will help in keeping your body properly fueled throughout the day, but will take some planning.

4. Carb Nite/Carb Backloading – There are two variations in this nutrition plan designed by John Kiefer, no not the one who works out at CrossFit Chicago. The basics of of Carb Nite is to keep levels of carbohydrates low throughout the week, and planning one night of high carbs to fuel for the week. Carb Backloading for this challenge will be designed for individuals who are already lean.
